After the death of his wealthy father in a car crash, Seán Murtagh flies home to Wicklow for the funeral. There he is stunned to discover that his father’s will disinherits his family and leaves everything – including the family home – to a secret son, Andrew Shaw.
The news fills the Shaw family with hope. Twenty-year-old Andrew is in desperate need of a kidney transplant, and for him the inheritance may mean the difference between life and death. However, the lives of Andrew, his devoted older sister Tors and young brother Jack are disrupted when their mother insists they move from their home in Kerry to Wicklow to stake their claim under the will. There they live in a tiny bungalow on the sea front, while the Murtaghs take steps to contest the will.
Gradually, both Seán Murtagh and Tors Shaw recognise the need to seek some middle ground but that seems impossible, such is the hostility between the families and the burning resentment that exists between the mothers.
Andrew Shaw’s focus, however, is not on the question of the inheritance. There is something else he needs from the Murtaghs . . . something only they can give him . . .
The Secret Son is a poignant and thought-provoking story that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

Well written story of the trials of two families when they discover parental secrets that wrench their ideas of who they are. I find the severe anguish and emotional collapse of one after another character a bit over the top. Most real people I know weather grief and conflict a little better than this. Nevertheless, the story features those problems that are caused when people break faith, keep secrets from loved ones, and make unwise bequests. I'm not sure why the story is set in Ireland. The universal themes could apply anywhere.Product details

The Secret Son edition by Jennifer Burke Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I like the suspense evoked by the interaction of the 2 Irish Families. The reader can witness a wide range of emotions by the two families.
Very captivating read. The story has a lot of twists and they all work together well. It's one of the most interesting books I have read recently.
I could not wait to finish this book. It held just enough interest to persuade me not to just quit reading it. Interesting basis for a story. Could not like any of the characters enough to care how it turned out.
The surprises keep coming! Interesting characters that you feel you know. You feel on the side of most of them but can all of them survive? Loved it to the very end and a week after finishing I keep thinking about them all.
Page turner! I kept predicting (in my head) what would happen next....but I got it wrong to my delight. I like a book with twists and irony interwoven. I like that I couldn't predict the next step. The F-bombs, however, I could have easily done without and still enjoyed the story. There was humor, shock, and suspense right up until the end.
When I began this book I found it interesting, the characters were well developed and it was a page turner. Something happened midway where I no longer felt that the characters were believable. Too much over drama in their reactions to situations making them seem unstable and not even likeable at times. By the end of reading this book I felt disappointed because I really wanted to love it.
I loved this book. An amazing and unusual plot unfolds through the lead characters thoughts and descriptions of events. By using multiple "voices" to tell the story, we feel the emotions of each character as they pick up the tale in turn. It is a very effective tool that gives balance to the reader's feelings. Well worth reading.
